Knights of the Road
A Radical Change in the way we see ourselves as professionals in this Industry!
Knights of the Road is a program designed to recognize the modern truck driver as a professional who employs a variety of duties that command an extensive array of skills and concentration. Truck drivers are an integral part of society, because most of the food we eat, the clothes we wear and the products we buy, all arrived for our convenient use - by truck!
Accountants, lawyers, engineers and doctors are all viewed as professionals because they earn their designation through a combination of experience, an ongoing commitment to formal education, testing, and a measured standard of conduct. Yet, safely operating 40 to 70 ton machines at highway speeds in all types of weather, plus being able to use satellite communications, on-board computers and deal with complex shipping and Customs documentation from all over the world has not been considered a recognized profession.
Recognition that commercial driving is a profession is long overdue!
Commercial drivers are not people driving to fill time while they look for another job. In fact, on average, professional drivers today are in their forties, with several children and a mortgage. These are people who have chosen what they want to do for a living and have committed years of their lives to gaining the required experience.
It takes a lot more than a class one license to be a safe, professional driver, a fact recognized by Kleysen's Knights of the Road program!
In the course of their careers professional drivers have to take dozens of different training programs ranging from load securement to documentation processing. When you take a serious look at the skills, training and experience it takes to be a commercial driver today it is hard to understand why a professional designation isn't mandatory.
The Knights of the Road program is a forerunner to what we hope will eventually become an industry wide professional designation.
Our philosophy is that it is time to raise the bar for what it takes to be a commercial driver through a combination of education, experience, and a code of conduct governing what it means to be a professional driver!
